“When a Tulip is not a tulip” A short story about Tulips at the Wynn Casino

In the Wynn Casino by the theater in Las Vegas, there lies or stands Jeff Koons famous high chromium stainless steel sculpture, Tulips.  The transparent color coating transforms ordinary steel into a beautiful multicolored display.  It is quite interesting and stunning to say the least.

Two guards stand by this statue 24/7. One of the guards told me that this piece is worth $32 million dollars.  I remember reading about another piece of sculpture by Jeff Koons going for $58 million.

Jeff Koons is my favorite modern artist.  Maybe I like the fact he was born in 1955, the year of my birth!  It so happens to be the same year as Steve Jobs and Bill Gates too.  One of Malcom Gladwell’s premise in his book, Outliers, is 1955 was a special time in history.  I truly believe that!

Walking around NYC we came across a large business foyer with a Jeff Koon’s sculpture.  The Balloon Rabbit (Red) is a stunning piece.  If this company wanted us to stop and look, the objective was achieved.  I didn’t see any guards but the door was locked and it would have taken one heck of a truck to cart this piece out.

In the summer of 2014, Jeff Koon’s was honored with a display at the Rockefeller Center called “Split-Rocker.”  It was designed out of flowering plants and would change with the season.

Unfortunately, we missed seeing Jeff Koon’s collection at the Whitney Museum in NYC as it was closed when we wanted to visit.  We made the trip all the way to the Whitney to find out that it was closed.  Always check the web!
