Our first tour with Trilogy was back in 1998 to Lanai. We still have fond memories of that tour. Our second time out with Trilogy was as memorable with the “Whale Watching.”
Jason was our captain and he did an awesome job taking us to where the whales were. A superb narration about the whales and their Maui habitats was given by another team member. We were most impressed with the service, information and passion they have for the whales.
For two hours we were captivated by the numerous whale activities in the channel. There was apparently competition going on with several males over a female. We were also treated to a pod of Spinner Dolphins that swam by.
The most memorable experience was seeing a whale go under our catamaran. The white underbelly turns “teal,” through the clear ocean blue waters. This whale was also “bloodied from the fight.”
We boarded at the Lahaina dock. At first I was a bit dismayed that there was no queue. We were nearly the first to arrive, but the last to board. Actually, it was a blessing in disguise as we sat in the back of the Catamaran and could move from side to side, taking plenty of pictures from my Canon 7-D with a 270 Tamron lens. In reality, if you want to take good whale pictures, you will need a zoom lens.
I noticed the Pacific Whale Fountain ship was filled with people, so were the smaller pontoon boats.
Being on the Trilogy catamaran just gave us that freedom with fewer people.
We are highly recommending this company as the quality has not waivered since our first trip in 1998.
