We came for a late lunch. La Posada is an iconic restaurant and hotel, not only of Winslow, but all of Arizona and the American Southwest.
The Turquoise Room restaurant is aptly named for its tranquility and great food. It is the best restaurant in eastern Arizona. The prices are reasonable and the ambiance is so southwest.
We first ordered La Posada’s Signature soup, sweet corn and spicy black bean. That was a tasty combination of flavors.
The pork carnitas was done superbly. I loved the “sweet corn cake” that came with it, absolutely delicious. The service, too, was extremely attentive.
We thoroughly enjoyed visiting this landmark hotel built in 1930. La Posada was the last of the Fred Harvey hotels built along the railroad. Mary Colter was the famous architect and La Posada is regarded as her best work.
The new owners since 1997 have refurbished the interior, but kept the unique character intact. Interesting art work has been added not only downstairs, but upstairs too.
Many of the rooms, also, are named for prior patrons like Charles Lindbergh, Jimmy Stewart, FDR, Harry Truman and the Double Mint Twins.
Even if you don’t eat at the Turquoise Room, it is well worth a visit to La Posada. A nice souvenir shop is located in the front of the hotel.
Just down the street is the famous corner made famous by the Eagles band.
And, on the eastern end is a park dedicated to 9/11 with actual girders from the Twin Towers.
Winslow may have had better days, but La Posada has weathered the storm and is a must see while visiting the area.
