2023 Hundertwasser, Vienna
We were extremely delighted to have seen the Hundertwasser apartment complex like no other. There are 53 apartments, 4 offices, shops, a cafe and museum. Although, going into one of the apartments is nearly impossible as they are residences.
We used Tram Line 1 and stopped at “Hetzgasse” to begin our journey. You can also take the “Hop-on-hop off bus” or even metro U1 or U4 stopping at Schwedenplatz station. The activity of visiting Hundertwasser is actually free and we loved every minute of it.
The concept was developed by an artist named Friedensreich Hunderrwasser. Aiding the artist was architect Josef Krawina who is named as co-founder of this exceptional architecture. The project started in 1983 and was completed in 1985. There are over 50 non-conforming—mosaic type of apartments which are off-limits. People actually live in this 7 storied building.
The 250 trees in and around the complex make for an unusual sight. The artist wanted to “prevent something ugly from going up in its place.”
There is a small people street with a few interesting shops and a café.
We saw a number of art students hard at work drawing.
The ambiance of the area is heart-warming and definitely unique and well worth a visit in busy Vienna. This adventure put a smile on my wife’s face.
An interesting quote by the free-thinking artist and architect, Frederick Hunderwasser called “SHIT CULTURE:”
