The New Mexico State House (a.k.a. “Roundhouse”) is but one of two that do not have a dome for its capital building (the other state being Nebraska.) It is walking distance from Santa Fe’s historic district.
The building is round with several floors and a unique rotunda. We visited when the New Mexico Congress was on break. We basically had “free rein” of the place, even walking into the House and Senate chambers.
There are over six million dollars of art work hanging on several floors of walls. Most of the art work was produced by creative New Mexico citizens. Our favorite is the “Buffalo Head” by Holly Hughes made of recycled materials. It is quite unique.
If you want a guided tour, they may have that too as the security guard is quite helpful with information.
It is a place where people can over-look while visiting Santa Fe, as the entire area is a collection of art and galleries. This one is well worth your time to visit.
