Overlooking central Switzerland and particularly the city of Lucerne, it is an easy twenty minute train ride from the Lucerne train station. You could also take the ride by boat, but the trip would be longer.
The city of Alpnachstad is where you get off the train.
The world’s steepest cogwheel railway is a few hundred feet away. It takes a good twenty minutes or so to climb the nearly 7,000 feet. We came back the same way, not taking the cable car to Kriens—known as the “Golden Round Trip.”
We have taken this ride with the cogwheel twice, and both times it was cloudy.
Nevertheless, the experience was fun. Millions of people have traveled to Mount Pilatus. President Teddy Roosevelt and Queen Victoria naming a few.
There is a belief that dragons once existed here.
Since our last expedition in 1985, a modern observation deck has been built, far superior and enjoyable. There is even a hotel at the top if you so choose to stay.
In June, there was still plenty of ice for snowballs.
We enjoyed taking the walk through the caves this time. There were areas that were wet, cold but enjoyable nevertheless.
With the Swiss Pass, it was half the price. Ironically, we have been to Mt. Rigi on beautiful days, but never Mount Pilatus. I truly think the name Pilatus means “cloud-topped.”
