When you come to Hanalei, you have to cross a one lane bridge. There is “local courtesy” that states that five to seven cars may cross at a time. We have seen as many as ten cars travel across. “Shaka” rules, though, and your turn will come as you “hang loose.”
The Hanalei Bay Beach is a short walk from downtown, or there are several beach parking lots—all free.
Hanalei Bay Beach is a beautiful crescent beach, with the “Bali Hai” mountains as a background. This is the area where Andy Irons, the famous Hawaiian surfer, came from. There are several signs in remembrance of Andy.
We like to walk to the pier. It makes an excellent picture of the entire bay.
There is a river that does stop you from going over to the St. Regis Resort area.
The homes along the beach are unpretentious, but very expensive. It is in one of these unpretentious homes that the movie “Descendants,” was filmed.
There are plenty of activities that go on at Hanalei besides surfing. People love to walk that beach!
Visiting the hamlet of Hanalei while in Kauai is a must. With that said, a visit to Hanalei Beach and a walk to the pier will add a nice memory to your trip.
