An icon restaurant along Waikiki Beach named after the legendary Hawaiian Olympic star and surfer, Duke Kahanamoku. We have always made it a point to have at least one meal at Dukes. This time we stopped twice.
We like to get there early for lunch and sit along the railing. Actually, great views can be had all through the restaurant of Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head. My wife enjoys the buffet spread. She loves Dukes “mahi-mahi.” The only problem about the buffet is that you eat too much. The tomato-basil soup was excellent, particularly with some parmesan cheese sprinkled across it.
It is a first rate restaurant with moderate prices. I had the Korean marinated meat tacos. The taco’s, a bit pricy, is so good and tasty. Visiting Dukes Waikiki over the years we ran into such people as Jimmy Buffett and the CEO of Shakey’s pizza chain in California.
We even ran into one of our ex-students from Martin County High School from Stuart, FL, Clint Walker, who still works at Dukes.
A must for those who have never ordered this dessert, is Duke’s famous Hula ice cream cake. Even if you have tried it, a second time is even better!
