Chapter 6, March 18th, Winslow, AZ “Taking It Easy”

After visiting the Petrified Forest, we had reservations at the Winslow Best Western. We like Best Western’s consistency, comfy beds and small refrigerator. Usually there is a breakfast too.

Maybe the loneliest BW we have ever been to. Come 8:00 PM, the place is full

Lee and Mabel Carroll told me that they will be staying at this BW on a future trip. I had originally planned on staying at the famous La Posada Hotel downtown. I agreed with Lee that the BW cancellation policy was easier than La Posada’s.

Winslow is a depressed area.  There are plenty of run down buildings.  A woman told me inside La Posada that people with money are coming from California and ” buying up property.”  Winslow may be a work in progress.

Kathie was good enough to allow me to explore the town on my own.  All by accident, I came across a corner with a statue.  I asked these two guys what the statue is all about.  “Haven’t you hear of the Eagles song, ‘Taking it Easy…in Winslow?”  One of the guys took a picture of me.  I went across the corner to a novelty store to buy a cloth patch about Winslow.

You have to hand it to Winslow as they have a 9-11 Memorial Park. There are two large girders from the Twin Towers. There are plenty of communities that don’t have that.

The highlight of visiting Winslow was visiting the historic La Posada’s Hotel. Many famous people stayed here like President FDR, Truman, Jimmy Doolittle, Jimmy Stewart and the Double Mint Twins to name a few people.

We walked around like guests and visited many of the rooms—at least the doors with a picture and story of the famous person who stayed in each room. We even made it upstairs to see the modern art that the hotel collected.

Plenty of “Modern Art” at La Posada Hotel

Kathie didn’t really like her meal at La Posada. I loved the corn chowder and the corn tamale that came with my pork dish. For a short time, I felt like we were walking on the footprints of some very famous people. It wasn’t crowded and there didn’t seem to be too many people staying in Winslow these days.

The next day we drove back to Las Vegas to fly out.  Along the way, we saw the beautiful San Francisco Peaks out of Flagstaff and near Vegas, the Black Canyon.
