Chapter 2, “The Grand Canyon,” March 15th, “Where’s the parking?

We picked up our rental from Enterprise at the Weston and drove five and half hours to the south rim of the Grand Canyon. Originally, I told Kathie it would take four hours.

We did manage to stop at a historical town called Seligman. It was part of Route 66 trek. We went into the Rusty Bolt to find a cloth patch with Seligman on it.  Some people collect spoons, post cards, I collect cloth patches.  I asked Kathie if she wanted something to eat at the “Road Kill” restaurant. You know what that answer was.

The Grand Canyon looks the same as it did back in 1968 when my family first visited. I wrote a short story under “Vignettes” on our travel blog: www.kmbtravelblog.com titled, “The Grand Canyon is not all that grand.”

I wanted Kathie to see “Bright Angel Trail,” as it brought back a lot of memories. The last time I was here was in 1984 with a good friend, Dr. Tony Beonde crossing the country to visit his parents in Palos Verdes, CA.

We were warned by Lee and Mabel Carroll about the awful parking at the visitor’s center. We must have ridden around for twenty minutes before we found something behind Bright Angel Lodge. I didn’t think March would be so popular, but it is.

We stayed at our first Premier Best Western. What was a memorable experience was waking up to a windshield covered with ice. I had to scrap it off with my room key. That was my first experience doing that.
