My fondest memories growing up are visiting the Fort in St. Augustine. There is nothing better to spark the imagination. In my sixties now, there is still a thrill visiting this icon of not only Florida, but the United States.
The oldest masonry fort in the United States is the Castillo. Thirty-three feet high, it is shaped like a star with four bastions that were painted red and white, colors of Spain.
You can still see some of the white paint today.Open from 8:45am to 5:15pm daily, over 500,000 people visit Castillo de San Marcos yearly. Volunteer guides will help you out in understanding important parts of the fort. The view from the surrounding area, particularly of the sea, is quite spectacular.Besieged twice, but the possession of the fort changed six times peacefully in its long history since 1695 when it was completed.
Made of local substance building the fort is a rock called “coquina.” The Park Service is having issues with the coquina.
Today we get in free using our senior card. Some of the more unique stories is the Castillo was the prison for Geronimo and Chief Osceola. It was part of the Confederacy during the Civil War. The moat area was mostly dry in its history, but the plumbing went out to the bay giving it literally a twenty-four seven flush.
Parking is limited, but there is plenty of parking in historic St. Augustine. Climbing the Lighthouse, visiting the Lightner Museum and taking the historic Flagler hotel tour are highly recommended activities while visiting St. Augustine. If you have time, the scenic cruise is extremely relaxing and visiting the Distillery is the newest favorite activity.
