Located on the southern end of Leeward Highway, the only Conch Farm in the world is easy to find. You will eventually hit a dirt road for a short while, but don’t let this discourage you from visiting.
This was our second visit, first being in 2007. Unfortunately, the grounds are a bit in disrepair since the hurricane of 2008.
Conch farming is not as profitable as one may think. It takes several years to grow a worthy conch.
The tour through the farm is a bit pricy, but worth the $12 dollars per person. Danver, our guide, is extremely thorough on his knowledge and delivery style. We learned quite a bit about the history and the process of Conch farming.
Today, the Conch Farm is also a “Fish Farm,” as they are branching out for economic survival.
The most interesting part was when Danver was able to have several friendly conchs stretch their bodies out from the conch shell. We now know what a female and male conch look like!
If you are interested in tasting good Conch Chowder, we recommend Graceway Gourmet market as they have a delicious Bahamian Conch style soup for only $4.29.
Caicos Dream Tours has a half day trip out to Half Moon Bay. Part of the journey is to actually dive for conch. A meal would be eventually served with the fresh conch.
There is really no taste to conch, but it is the texture which people enjoy.
