To begin, Kafalonia, also spelt Cephallonia, Greece is a beautiful island in the Ionian Sea.
It is about a forty-five minute airplane ride from Corfu or even Athens. This is the island where the movie Captain Corelli’s Mandolin took place with Penelope Cruz and Nicolas Cage. It is a true story of an Italian Army that was massacred by the Nazi’s during WWII. Our hotel for the week was a five star rated Trapezaki Bay Hotel.
Niko, Sophia and their son, Spiro, make you feel more welcomed than if you were in your own home.
We stayed at this exceptional place in the sun for seven days. We had a full mountain view and a partial ocean view–just your standard room–but it was exceptional. Sitting out on the balcony every night made the experience memorable. The stars were so bright and you can see the Milky way. Niko calls his workers and family “the Trapezaki Team” and they go out of your way to make your experience superb. As I remember:
1. The entire Trapezaki valley knows this family.
2. A lot of British visitors. We are from Florida, but found everyone to be very friendly.
3. Great snorkeling at St. Thomas Beach a walk away.
4. The “Blue Pool” is exceptional. I am not one to swim in a pool, but this one I did everyday.
5. We did ask Niko for a fan–as we do like our room colder–and a new fan was delivered!
6. The place is immaculate. Very, very clean…
7. We made the mistake of not notifying Niko that we had transportation already arranged. They met us at the airport.
8. The food at the hotel is top-notch. They will actually cook you eggs to order in the morning.
9. I remember Niko giving me a personal call to confirm our reservations. I’ve been to Greece 5 times and this was a first. Very personable and Niko and his wife Sophia lived in N.Y. for a long time.
10. You can actually see your room on line–neat
11. The island has a lot to see and plenty to offer. We would go back in a heartbeat.
