Reachable in a few hours from Mount Rushmore is Devil’s Tower located in eastern Wyoming. It is truly one of the most unique geological formations in the United States. Along the way, we came across true “bumpkin” travelers.
The 1,267 foot Tower can be seen from miles out on the road. The summit is actually over 5,000 feet high in elevation.
We were there on August 21, 2017 to witness the solar eclipse. Luckily, the National Park Service handed out protective visors for the event. It was a day we will never forget.
There is a walkable 1.3 mile trail around Devil’s Tower—also known as Bear Lodge Butte. Like many tourists, we had to have our picture with Devil’s Tower in the background.
We did notice that people were actually climbing down from the Tower’s top. These people saw the eclipse at that level. I don’t think viewing the eclipse would be that different from our level. Climbing Devil’s Tower would be awesome though.
At the Visitors Center, we witness young people being sworn in by a Park official. This program advocates protecting and learning about our National Park system.
Lastly, I have to admit this one story. As we were entering the Devil’s Tower National Memorial Park, I videoed a segment—which I later placed on Facebook—with the music from Close Encounters of the Third Kind. At that time in 2017, Facebook had not placed a restriction on using syndicated music with personal videos. We still smile on what we created.
Thank you for joining us for “Reminiscing Sundays.”
