Chapter 5, March 18th, “What I regret the most”

Another hour east on I-40 through the town of Holbrook on Route 180 will take you on the Southern end of Petrified Forest National Park. I did stop to take a picture at “Wigwam Motel” where the rooms are designed as Wigwams.” I still think they rent rooms too.

Plenty of petrified rock was being sold by various venders. Apparently, there is a lot of this stuff around there. My brother and I wished we had known that in 1968 because we did take a “small piece” out of the park. I feel so guilty about that incident, even today. I wonder if my dad would have purchased a piece of petrified wood rock though. He was so frugal to say the least.

This gift shop was selling all sizes of petrified wood.

Ok, I know I am in shorts, but it was cold. Kathie stayed in the car.

The weather was blustery and cold. We did go into a National Park museum and there is a trail that leads into a Petrified Rock field. The minerals replaced the wood over 200 million years ago when the petrifying process began.

There are a number of trails and stops to make. The most memorable stop was at the Agate Bridge. It is a petrified tree over a small canyon. Underneath the tree it has been washed out making it a cool site.

Kathie would like to come back when the weather isn’t so cold.
